Smack Down Predator Hunt Feb 17th/18th

Make sure you get registered now!

Rules and Regulations:

1. Maximum of four members per team.
2. Teams may split up as long as they are on the same property. If you move locations the entire team must move.
3. Hunting baited areas, road kill, poison, pen raised, trapping, and snares is prohibited
4. No pooling of varmints with other teams.
5. No hunting of county roads or state highways.
6. No shooting across highways or publicly traveled roads.
7. No shooting of varmints across fences in which you are not permitted to hunt.
8. All varmints killed must be on land you are permitted to hunt.
9. All varmints will be checked for freshness. Varmints from your freezer will result in DQ!
10. Shotguns are allowed.
11. All ties will be broken by whoever has the heaviest cat.
12. Any disqualified varmints will result in disqualification of team.
13. Hunting license will be required to be presented and hunter ID # will be added to your sign in sheet.
14. Teams must follow all Texas Parks and Wildlife rules and regs.
15. ALL WINNING TEAMS WILL TAKE POLYGRAPH!

20% of the entry fees will benefit the Outdoor Adventure Foundation.

Side pots on heaviest animal will be available for $20. There will also be a side pot for heaviest hog, and most hogs. Lets make this interesting.

Scoring and Payout
Lions- 24pts.
Bobcats- 10pts.
Coyotes-6pts.

1st Place- 70% of pot
2nd Place- 30% of pot

$100.00 per team Entries must be cash only!

Contest check in time will be at 7:00 PM Friday the 17th of February 2012. Teams will hunt that night and must be back the next day at 5:00 pm Saturday the 18th. Any teams that are not in Armstrong County Activity Center by 5:00 pm will not be allowed to enter their varmints.

Beefmaster-Steak Cook off! May 20th!

Make plans to attend or participate in the Fat Boy Outdoors Beefmaster cook off. This event will be held in conjunction with the Rt. 66 Road Kill Cook off. Show us your best steak. You will have one hour to cook your best steak. We don't care how you cook it, what you put on it, or how it looks...it just better taste good. $20 per team. You must provide your own ribeye steak. Steaks will be checked by judge and can have nothing added before the contest begins. We will pay the top 3 places and also give a donation to the Groom Rodeo Association out of the proceeds.

I was out yesterday checking hog traps and feeders and came across a group of turkeys headed to the roost. One by one they took off flying into the trees. It was a beautiful sight. I can't wait until next week when the chase for these guys begins.

FINALLY...I get to post all of these other deer...I finally took my deer this morning. This buck came in to check out what three smaller bucks were up too. He made a rub, then a scrape...then I laid the smack down.

My buddy Bret Goad took this big brute right outside of Wheeler. Remember your friends next time you go out hunting....I think I still have a tag left for Wheeler County....great shooting!

Big Lee Orr took this nice mulie on December 5th near Claude. Not only can Lee tackle a quarterback, he can sure hunt!

Awesome story here from a young hunter who bagged his 1st buck.
Hi, my name is Jace Paris and I am 10 years old. On November 25 my dad, and I were out to shoot a deer. It was my first time to ever go hunting. There was about 75 deer gazing. But a seven point deer caught my eye! I took the shot and about 20 feet away from where I shot this deer there he was laying dead. It was a clean shot and I was so excited and nervous. It was my first deer! I thank those that took time to teach me to hunt and letting me go out to their place to hunt. I can’t wait to go back. I come from a baseball and football family and have never been hunting or have anybody in my family who hunts. My dad is a Marine and knows how to shoot a guns, but hunting is a different kind of talent he says. I plan to go hunting again soon!

J.T Christian of Claude took his first buck on 11/30/2009. Great job J.T. Although his daddy, Rit Christian, showed who was boss by taking this monster mulie a couple of days earlier.

Tommy Tucker of Tyler, Texas took this 10 point mulie at 210 yards on opening day. This buck was killed on the Lazy S ranch in Armstrong county while on a guided hunt by Fat Boy Outdoors. Great shooting Tommy.

Eric White of Amarillo took this nice mulie off a wheat field in Armstrong County. Not only can he build you a house, this guy can hunt!

Coty Jewell of Amarillo took this nice mule deer after a extensive spot and stalk. Great hunting and congrats!

Jesse Lovell of Claude, Texas took this nice Mule Deer buck opening day of bow season. He shot the deer at 60 yards. Jesse shot him with a PSE X-Force 70# with 29" Easton Full Metal Jacket 340's, blazer vanes, Easton Tracer Nocks, and 125 grain Grim Reaper razor tip expandable broad heads. Pictured with Jesse is his 4 year old son Hunter. Good hunting.

December 3rd of last year, we went on a trip to Encinal with a vendor, Matoka Environmental. The evening before, the ranch hand had seen this buck in a fight with another, and could tell this was the dominant buck for sure. So we went to a pop up blind over some sendero’s and a feeder about 200 yards out. As soon as it was breaking day, we could see two deer down the cut, with one definitely being a stud. Eventually it became light enough to see that indeed a shooter buck was down there, but he would not turn broadside. Finally after about 15 minutes of staring at him through the scope, he presented me with a shot, and the 270 with 130 grain hornady interbonds let loose. He was hit good, but ran into the brush. My guide said we should wait a few minutes, just to make sure we didn’t push him any farther in the weesatch and mesquite. We’ll, neither he nor I could stand it, so after about 10 minutes, we headed out to go find him. As we walked up, my guide froze, and said “I think there are hogs on him!” I raised my gun, stepped into the clearing, and at about 15 yards a pack of Coyotes, not hogs, was on my buck, eating away! I shot at the alpha male, who had his snout in the deer’s hind end, and the 270 passed through and dropped a big female as well. Luckily, they had not eaten much, enough to lose one of the hams, but that was it. Truly a one of a kind experience, and a trophy to boot. The buck was 6.5 years old, and scored 146” Gross, being almost 22” inside! He had broken a tine the night before in the fight, as the ranch hand that saw him said he had a full rack the evening before. Truly a tough buck!

Turkeys and Rattlers?

This story comes from my good friend J.D. Graham from Amarillo, TX. J.D. was putting a stalk on a ole Tom this weekend when he ran into this big rattler. Then it was decision time. Shoot the rattler and lose the turkey or get snake bit and get the turkey. J.D. decided to play it safe and shoot the rattler....then hustled to the Tom where he was able to shoot the ole bird which promptly fell into a stock tank. So great shooting J.D., you have a story to tell around the campfire for years to come. The moral of the story is WATCH YOUR STEP. Looks like it is going to be a bad year for snakes!

Texas Deer In a Hog Trap!

Our adventure this week is one that we didn't expect. We had set our hog traps hoping for a big catch. We were shocked when we went out to check on the traps and had a young whitetail buck in the trap. That is when the games begin. The good news is that we were able to release the deer without it injuring itself....OR US! Enjoy!

Our newest video is of a late afternoon quail hunt. We only had about an hour to get to the field and we sure made the most of it. It was a quality hunt and a good time. We ended up with 5 birds. Muzzle Loader Buck!

Great story from Arkansas. This story comes from Greg Pillow who was hunting with his 9 year old son Jack. It was opening day of muzzleloading season. Jack uses a 50 cal. in line muzzleloader. We did not have any doe tags for the zone we were in. We saw several does early that morning. Around 8 am an 8 point started walking towards us. It took him forever to turn broadside. I kept telling Jack to wait. He finally turned and I told Jack to go ahead and shoot. He shot. Due to the smoke I had no idea whether he hit the deer or not. We waited about 10 minutes. Jack couldn't stand it any longer. We found blood, but not much. It was bright red. I assumed it was a flesh wound. (We later found out Jack had shot the deer in the neck. He was aiming for the lungs, but I guess he got a little excited). We trailed the deer for over 200 yards. We then jumped the deer and he ran towards us. I'm sure we was confused.It was quite a rush. We let him lay for a while and then recovered him. Jack was excited. This was his first buck that had a rack.

We just had a great group down for two days of hardcore pheasant hunting. We had great success killing 8 cocks on day one and 10 on day two. And who says girls can't hunt? Teri Self makes me really jealous with this big boy. She shot it on
their property at Balmorhea, TX - (Reeves County). She and her husband were
'making the rounds' when Teri spotted the antlers above the broom weed.
There were two deer bedded down, and when they got up to run, she made a
perfect neck shot, and the buck dropped where he was. This is not her
first deer, but it's definitely her best. Great shooting...congratulations!

I know you were hoping for something else...but this is a sure nice deer taken by Brady Morgan of Wheeler, TX. He took this 8 point with a 21 inch spread with a 243 at about 250 yards. He was ratteling about dark and the deer was coming to the rattle. He is about a 240-250 pound deer. Good shooting Captain!

Mark Freeman took this nice Blackbuck. It was shot on the Hatch Ranch in Garvin, TX on 11/22/08. Horns are 18" and he weighed about 110lbs. He spent a day and half trying to get a shot, and when he finally did he took him with 308 at 75 yds. Congratulations Mark! Keep the pictures coming!

Lucy Park Buck!

This is an interesting story. Allegedly a city worker from Wichita Falls shot this deer in Lucy Park, in the middle of Wichita Falls, from his city work truck. Again...allegedly, he then took the animal straight to the taxidermist...guts and all. Needless to say this young man is in quite a bit of trouble. The deer is going to score well over 200. Sad that this buck was allegedly, taken illegally....but what an animal!

Here is the press release:Wichita Falls city officials confirm that a city parks department employee is now suspended from work. It's due to an investigation into the shooting of a deer in the city limits. Web postings have surfaced claiming to show pictures of the trophy buck and worker. City officials say the location of the incident has not been confirmed. Some reports on the internet say it was at Lucy Park – but one city worker says he heard it was at another location. A spokesman for Texas Parks and Wildlife confirms that a local game warden *is* investigating – and may be able to release information next week.

The Clearwater Ranch
640 +/- Acres
Childress County, TX

This ranch is truly phenomenal, with large bluffs, excellent cover, and a flowing creek running through the whole property! A hidden jewel in the area, it is located at the end of a public road and surrounded by farms.

The ranch abounds in elevation change. The property has approximately 3.5 miles of deep ravines and canyons running through it, with the main channel carrying the seasonal Running Water Creek. The sound of this creek running through the canyon echos up its walls and creates a serene atmosphere, like is not found on most ranches in the area. Varying in depth from 1'-3', the Running Water Creek consistently flows water from Fall to Spring, and there are several good locations along it where a dam could be built to form a 25+ acre lake, for year around water.

The Clearwater Ranch is approximately 2/3 cover and 1/3 open. The 2/3 cover is native pasture that rolls down to the creek bottoms of the ranch. Mature hackberry and mesquite trees dominate the pastures, while cottonwood, willow, and plum thickets line the creek. The pastures have excellent ground cover, with a variety of seed-bearing grasses and brush.
Dove are solid throughout, and bobwhite quail make their home here too. Whitetail deer and wild hog can be found almost anywhere on the property, as evidenced by the game trails and tracks running from top to bottom. A few beavers even reside in the creek bottom and have formed some deep pools where water backs up from their "logging" activies!

The 1/3 open area is in a cresent moon shape on the east side of the ranch and consists of fertile, sandy-loan farm land. This field is terraced and is currently planted in cotton on a 1/4 share crop lease. The field has two deep nooks next to the native pasture, which would be ideal for developing food plot systems for the wildlife. Even as it stands now, the field is covered in deer tracks, and it is common to see the heads of deer "floating" across the tall cotton plants as they travel back and forth across the ranch!

In addition to hunting, the Clearwater Ranch offers lots of other recreational activities! The hills and ravines provide scenic horseback riding, and are ideal for ATVs and 4-wheeling too. There is a small, rustic cabin on the northeast corner of the ranch, with a fireplace, kitchenette, and bathroom. Stairs go up from the front porch to the roof, where a person can sit and star-gaze or watch the sun set over the creek.

The Clearwater Ranch is definitely a ranch you'll enjoy for years to come. Lots of wildlife and beautiful views! All for $1250/acre.
